Greetings and 大家好to all of the folks reading this page!
My name is Jen Chan ( 陈之珍), the Miss Congeniality of the MCC Court. It is a great privilege to serve our community and this year I look forward to bringing joy, laughter, and pride to Chinatown.
While growing up, I faced considerable racism. People have mocked me for my heritage and even overtly called me “ugly” or “low class” for being of Chinese descent. I believe the largest source of this discrimination is ignorance.
Therefore, my platform is to combat racism through education. I hope to advocate for reading/literacy among young children through several ways:
Hosting Read-aloud events in neighborhood libraries
Visiting schools to read books with kids
Hosting events with Asian-American Authors
Through these events, I hope our community can learn about other cultures while helping others to fall in love with our beautiful heritage.
Miss Chinese Chicago Court
This pageant is not just an opportunity to sit around and look pretty. Rather, I hope to leverage this experience to give back to the amazing community that raised me and instill confidence in young girls of all ethnicities. As the MCC Court, we will hopefully make positive change.
