Born and raised in Chicago Chinatown, Randall Tom attended St. Therese Chinese Catholic School.
Randall worked for Grainger’s IT Department for 34 years, after which he recently retired. At Grainger he managed large SAP Projects and implemented an Outsourcing engagement with India. While at Grainger, Randall kept in touch with his Chinese roots by working with the Asian Business Resource Group and helped found the Grainger Dragon Boat Program which twice won the Chinatown Chamber of Commerce’s Dragon Boat Race for Literacy.
Randall is the outgoing VP on the Board for the Greater Chicago Dragon Boat Club, a not for profit organization proud to bring Dragon Boating to the Chicago River for all people to learn and enjoy.
Beginning in 2017, Randall has been donating his time and experience to start the Chinatown Community Dragon Boat Team, called “Chinatown Fury”. He did this to give back to the community he was born and to teach the community the skill of dragon boating which is tied to Chinese Culture going back over 2000 years. His goal is to one day build a very competitive team from the Chinatown Community to compete in races throughout Chicago and surrounding areas.
Randall also volunteers with Adaptive Adventures, a not for profit organization helping veterans and people with disabilities to become active in society through sports.
In addition to Dragon Boating, Randall is an avid cyclist, kayaker, downhill and cross county skier, and a ski instructor at Wilmot Mountain.
Recently Randall took on the challenge to try out for the Team USA Senior C Dragon Boat Team. If he is fortunate to be selected for this team, Randall will be able to represent the U.S. in the 2019 International Dragon Boat Races held in Thailand.
